Editing Your Wardrobe

Consider your wardrobe as a collection of identities we've inhabited over the years. Some pieces still feel deeply aligned with who we are today. Others belong to a different chapter - a previous career, a different lifestyle, a former relationship, or simply an earlier version of ourselves. This is why editing a wardrobe can feel surprisingly emotional. In many ways, organizing your wardrobe is more about making space for the person you're becoming.

Begin With Three Words

Before you sort a single hanger, ask yourself one question: What three words describe how I want to look and feel in my clothing?

Recent clients have chosen words such as:

  • Natural

  • Comfortable

  • High quality

  • Modern

  • Bold

  • Fitted

  • Timeless

  • Eclectic

  • Sporty

  • Functional

  • Refined

There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is simply to identify the qualities you want your wardrobe to support.

Let Your Values Guide Your Decisions

Once you've identified your three words, they become remarkably useful for making decisions. If comfortable is one of your guiding values, it becomes much easier to part with the beautiful sweater that always feels itchy. If high quality matters to you, the cardigan that's pilled beyond repair may have already served its purpose. If your wardrobe is moving toward something more modern or refined, the band t-shirts you've kept for years out of habit may no longer reflect who you are today. In this example of band t-shirts, it doesn't necessarily mean they belong in the donation bag. Some clothing carries memories worth preserving. A few select pieces that represent meaningful chapters of your life can always be thoughtfully stored as keepsakes rather than occupying valuable space in your everyday wardrobe.

Your Wardrobe Is a Reflection of Your Life

I've often found that the words people choose for their wardrobe also describe the life they're trying to create. A client who longs for clothing that feels natural and uncomplicated is often seeking those same qualities beyond the closet. Someone drawn toward elegance may also be cultivating greater confidence. Someone choosing refined may be simplifying far more than their wardrobe. So before your next closet edit, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

What three words do I want my wardrobe to embody? You may discover you're organizing far more than your clothes.
