Thoughtful packing is about preparing for your trip in a way that feels calm, intentional, and effortless. A little planning beforehand allows you to pack with confidence and avoid carrying far more than you'll actually use. Here are a few of the principles I rely on.

Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To

Rather than packing the night before, begin a packing pile a week or more in advance.

As items come to mind, simply add them to the pile. Then, a day or two before departure, review everything with fresh eyes. You'll almost always find a handful of items that seemed essential at first but aren't actually necessary. Packing in two stages naturally leads to a lighter, more intentional suitcase.

Plan Around Your Itinerary

Before selecting clothing, consider how you'll actually spend your time. Will your days be at the beach and your evenings at restaurants? Will you be hiking, attending meetings, or exploring a city on foot? Once you understand the rhythm of your trip, create a simple packing list organized into categories:

  • Outerwear and footwear

  • Clothing and accessories

  • Swimwear and activewear

  • Toiletries

  • Electronics and chargers

  • Travel-day essentials (neck pillow, headphones, earplugs, reusable water bottle, book)

  • Health care items, first aid, and medications

  • Passport, travel documents, credit cards, travel apps, foreign currency, and directions

  • A final checklist for preparing your home before you leave

A categorized list reduces the likelihood of forgetting important items and makes packing feel far more manageable.

Roll, Don't Fold

Rolling clothing remains one of the simplest ways to maximize suitcase space while keeping everything visible. It also makes it easier to fit those last few items without creating unnecessary bulk.

Leave Room for the Return Trip

Whenever possible, leave a section of your suitcase available for laundry. Packing a lightweight laundry bag allows you to separate worn clothing from clean items throughout your trip. It also makes it easier to accommodate any purchases you bring home without completely repacking your suitcase.

Contain the Small Things

Loose chargers, adapters, cables, toiletries, and travel accessories have a way of disappearing just when you need them. Using small pouches or zippered organizers keeps similar items together, making everything easier to locate while travelling. The fewer loose items you have, the less time you'll spend searching.

Check Your Luggage Before You Leave

Avoid unnecessary surprises at the airport by weighing your suitcase before you leave home and confirming your airline's baggage allowance in advance. A few moments of preparation can save both time and unexpected baggage fees.

Pack Your Carry-On Thoughtfully

Even if you never expect your checked luggage to be delayed, it's worth preparing for the possibility. Keep your essentials with you: medications, travel documents, a toothbrush, fresh underwear, and a change of clothes—whatever would help you feel comfortable for the first day if your suitcase arrived later than you did. A thoughtfully packed carry-on offers peace of mind that's well worth the small amount of extra planning.

The best packing systems are about bringing exactly what you need, knowing where everything is, and beginning your travels feeling organized long before you reach your destination.
